NEW HOMEOWNERS--Be sure to apply for Homestead Credits / 65+ Exemption and Military Tax Exemption by July 1. Applications can be completed at our office or obtained online by clicking on "Additional Information & Links" above and then the Iowa City Assessor Page.

To apply online do a parcel search, select your parcel/property and select the credit you wish to apply for. You will find the link(s) near the top left of that page.

REMINDER:

The deadline to file for Homestead Tax Credit, Disabled Veterans Homestead Tax Credit, and Military Exemption is July 1, 2024 for the 2024 assessment year (taxes payable September 2025 / March 2026). Applications may be submitted to our office via in person, email (cityassr@johnsoncountyiowa.gov) or mail. All applications received or postmarked after July 1st will be processed for the 2025 assessment year (taxes payable September 2026 / March 2027).

The 2024 assessed values will be used for the taxes payable September 2025 and March 2026.

The 2023 assessed values will be used for the taxes payable September 2024 and March 2025.

The Iowa City Assessor's Office has moved to the third floor of the Health and Human Services Building at 855 S Dubuque Street. We will be operating out of that space until late summer 2024.

Homestead Exemptions for those who are 65 years of age or older and signed by July 1, 2024 will be applied to the 2024 assessment.  The 2024 assessment will have taxes due in September 2025 and March 2026.  The upcoming September tax bill is based on the 2023 assessment and includes credits/exemptions that were signed by July 1, 2023.  

 

For Commercial, Industrial and Railroad Property - beginning for the 2022 assessment year property taxes, the Business Property Tax Credit has been repealed and replaced with a Two-Tier Assessment Limitation.  The first $150,000 of assessed value will now receive an assessment limitation that is equal to Residential Property (46.3428%).  The remainder of assessed value will continue to receive an assessment limitation of 90%.  More information is available at https://tax.iowa.gov/hf2552-bptc

To access Board of Review Petitions online please click here.  We will be accepting petitions from April 2, 2024 to April 30, 2024. If mailed, they must be postmarked by April 30, 2024.
